Introducing “Week of Meals”: Our new series aims to give you easy recipes for busy weekdays

People are getting tired of cooking. I understand that feeling well, especially as someone whose job it is to cook and come up with new recipes to inspire you, the reader. Whether for work or pleasure, I never chop or cook anything. The endless meal planning, organizing and, worst of all, dishes really take a toll. All this to say, I understand you.

A year after making more meals at home than ever before, fatigue has set in with even the most cooking-obsessed among us. So to ease the frustration of having to cook for yourself or your household every day, I introduce a series called “Week of Meals” that will give you five recipes for evening dinners with all the planning and strategy built-in.

Each meal will make four servings, assemble – start to finish – in less than 60 minutes and require 10 or fewer ingredients. Groceries for all five meals can be purchased from a single grocery store and in a single shopping trip (remember, we seek to alleviate your frustration) and will cost less than $ 100 in total.

Of course, there are some caveats: Spices, condiments, and other basic eats I expect you have will be priced according to the amount used in the recipes, and whenever possible, I will provide substitutes for them in the main note of the recipe. But also know that if I am looking for certain spices, they will be used at least twice during the week so you can get used to incorporating them in different ways and with different ingredients.

Staples like salt and pepper, cooking oil and water will not be included in the shopping list, nor will they be included in the 10 ingredients for each recipe (because, yes, if you do not have these things, takeaway may be the best option) . For oil, however, I will provide the total amount needed for all five recipes so you can check if you have enough before shopping.

All the ingredients to be prepared in advance will be listed in the “Sunday Preparation” section, so when it’s time to cook, some of the hard work will have already been done. And all meat, products, herbs or other fresh / perishable ingredients will be fully depleted by the end of the week, so there will be no half-used, unfortunately withering herb bundles to throw out on Friday.

We will publish the grocery list in its entirety along with the specific grocery store where the author has shopped so you, if you choose, can go to that place or the same chain. Specialty chains and gourmet grocery stores will be banned.

Whether you follow the plan fully or just make one recipe, my hope is that you will enjoy delicious, simple and balanced evening meals without any of the mental or physical anguish that comes with planning and preparation. Sometimes I will develop the recipes for a “week of meals”, but much of the time they will be developed by other chefs and writers in California with the goal of getting them – by going to their own grocery stores – to show you where different chefs get dinner on the table during the week.
